Description
IPPOG is a network of scientists, science educators and communication specialists working across the globe in informal science education and public engagement for particle physics. IPPOG develops programmes and strategy to address the current and future challenges of particle physics and the scientific community, like declining interest in STEM-related studies, lack of support of fundamental research and mistrust in science. We aim to improve public understanding and appreciation of the benefits of fundamental physics including its many applications, to spark interest and enthusiasm among young people, and to strengthen the integration of science in society.
IPPOG's flagship activity is the International Particle Physics Masterclasses programme. Activities related with cosmic rays, such as the International Cosmic Day and International Muon Week are also promoted and supported by IPPOG. Members of IPPOG also participate in public talks, festivals, exhibitions, teacher training, student competitions, and open days at local institutes. A resource database has been developed containing a wealth of material for the dissemination of particle physics. In this presentation the goals of IPPOG will be presented, and its various activities, including those in the Czech and Slovak Republics, will be discussed.
