End of Time and Physics Nobel Prize 2020

by Dr Alexander Vikman (Institute of Physics, Czech Academy of Sciences)

Description

Abstract:

This year the Physics Nobel Prize was awarded for the research on Black Holes.  In particular, the first half went to Roger Penrose for the singularity theorem, or as Nobel Committee formulated “for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity”, while the second half was shared between Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez for  “the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy”.  I will review physics behind these results and their relevance.  Moreover, I will do my best to popularly explain what Black Holes are and why they are interesting and important objects.
